For most of history, education was partly an answer to scarcity.
Knowledge was difficult to preserve and expensive to distribute. Books were rare. Expert teachers were accessible to relatively few people. A person’s intellectual world was constrained by geography, class, language, and the institutions they could enter. Schools and universities gathered scarce resources—texts, teachers, laboratories, peers, traditions—and made them available in a structured place.
That model did more than distribute information. It formed communities, created disciplines, certified competence, expanded horizons, and produced knowledge of its own. Its importance should not be reduced to a library with lectures attached.
But one condition on which it was built is changing.
A person with an internet connection can now ask for an explanation at nearly any level, translate across languages, explore an unfamiliar field, generate examples, practice a conversation, analyze a document, test an idea, write code, or work alongside a cognitive system that responds immediately. These systems are imperfect. They can be confidently wrong. They do not possess wisdom simply because they can produce fluent answers. Access is not yet equal, and the best human expertise remains scarce.
Still, the direction is unmistakable: a growing range of cognitive assistance is becoming abundant.
This creates a different educational question. If more people can access powerful intelligence, what will they direct it toward?
A different kind of abundance
The first response to abundant intelligence is often to imagine better access to the education we already know: a tutor for every student, an assistant for every teacher, a personalized explanation for every concept. These possibilities matter. A patient tutor that adapts to a learner’s pace could widen access to forms of support that were once reserved for those with money, proximity, or luck.
But cheaper answers do not resolve the problem of what is worth asking. More options do not determine which one deserves pursuit. A system can help someone optimize a plan without knowing whether the plan is worthy, borrowed, or responsive to the life they are actually living.
Intelligence is not the same as direction.
By intelligence here, we mean the ability to explain, analyze, generate, calculate, compare, and assist. By direction, we mean the human capacity to orient within a situation, decide what matters, choose a meaningful next move, and revise in light of what happens.
The distinction is easy to miss because intelligence can simulate direction. A system can recommend a career, produce a five-year plan, or rank a set of choices. But a recommendation is not a commitment. A plan is not a life. The person still has to decide what consequences to accept, whose needs to consider, what uncertainty to bear, and what kind of person the pursuit asks them to become.
As answers become easier to generate, these acts of authorship become more important.
The new scarcity
Abundance does not abolish scarcity. It moves it.
When information is difficult to obtain, access is the bottleneck. When information is everywhere, attention, discernment, and action become bottlenecks. When capable tools are broadly available, the advantage shifts toward those who can frame problems, exercise judgment, coordinate with others, and continue through ambiguity.
This is not an argument that knowledge matters less. Direction without knowledge is merely confidence. Judgment must be informed. Capability must be developed. Some professions rightly require demanding credentials because other people bear the consequences of incompetence.
The argument is that knowledge and skill belong inside a larger educational purpose: increasing a person’s capacity to navigate life responsibly.
That capacity includes self-knowledge, but it is not self-absorption. It includes choice, but not endless option browsing. It includes adaptability, but not accommodation to every external demand. It includes agency, but not the fantasy that social conditions, obligations, health, money, and power do not constrain action.
Direction is practiced orientation under real conditions.
It asks: Where am I? What is changing? What matters now? What can I do next? What did that action teach me? What responsibility follows?
These questions have always mattered. They matter more when the menu of possible actions expands faster than the institutions that once organized them.
The weakening of the predetermined path
Modern education has often been narrated as a sequence: learn, earn a credential, enter work, advance, retire. The sequence was never universal, but it became a powerful social map. It gave families a script, institutions a structure, and individuals a way to interpret progress.
That map has not disappeared. For many people, a degree remains transformative. Disciplined study before professional practice remains indispensable. Universities continue to be sites of research, friendship, discovery, and maturation.
Yet the sequence is becoming less sufficient as a map for an entire life.
People move between industries, combine roles, build projects alongside employment, return to learning, care for family, recover from disruption, and repeatedly encounter technologies that change the content of their work. In the United States, median tenure with a current employer was 3.9 years in 2024. Global employers surveyed by the World Economic Forum expected a substantial share of core job skills to change by 2030. These figures do not prove that every career is chaotic. They do show why a single front-loaded period of preparation cannot carry the full developmental burden of adulthood.
The emerging pattern is less like a ladder and more like navigation:
Act. Encounter uncertainty. Learn. Experiment. Reflect. Adapt. Act again.
The important shift is not from education to no education, or from institutions to isolated individuals. It is from education as preparation for a stable path toward education as support for repeated navigation.
Direction is built through movement
Traditional career advice often assumes that clarity should precede action. Identify the right field. Choose the right program. Construct the right plan. Then begin.
Sometimes this is wise. An expensive or irreversible decision deserves reflection. But many consequential forms of clarity cannot be produced through analysis alone. A person cannot fully know whether they enjoy a kind of work without doing some version of it. They cannot discover how they respond to a culture without entering it, or whether an idea survives contact with another person without sharing it.
Reality contains information that introspection does not.
Movement is how that information becomes available. A conversation reveals an assumption. A small project exposes a missing skill. A week in a different environment changes a sense of possibility. A rejected application clarifies a gap. Service to another person rearranges priorities. Failure can reveal whether the goal was shallow, the method was wrong, or the commitment was real.
This does not mean “just do something.” Motion can be avoidance. Busyness can protect a person from choosing. Reckless experiments can impose costs on others.
Useful movement has three qualities. It is consequential enough to produce genuine feedback, bounded enough to be responsible, and reflective enough to become learning.
The resulting loop is simple:
- Orient
- Act
- Encounter
- Reflect
- Adapt
- Act again
Orientation names the current reality without demanding total certainty. Action creates contact. Encounter permits the world—including other people—to answer back. Reflection distinguishes signal from emotion or noise. Adaptation changes the next move.
Over time, the loop does more than produce a decision. It develops a navigator.
What should remain human
Discussions about AI and education often end with a list of “soft skills.” The phrase is too weak for the capacities at stake.
Judgment is not soft when other people bear the consequences of a decision. Responsibility is not soft when no model can accept moral accountability on our behalf. Courage is not soft when a worthwhile action carries social or material risk. Relationship is not soft when trust determines whether people can coordinate, learn, heal, or build together.
The distinctively human task is not to preserve a shrinking list of activities machines cannot perform. That would make human value depend on the temporary limits of a tool.
The deeper task is to become better authors, participants, and stewards of a world in which powerful intelligence is available.
That requires deciding what deserves attention. It requires taste: the ability to recognize quality before it is easily measured. It requires curiosity strong enough to cross a boundary and humility strong enough to revise. It requires the capacity to form commitments rather than merely sample options. It requires embodied experience, because lives are lived through bodies, places, relationships, and time—not only through representations of them.
It also requires contribution. Agency detached from other people becomes consumer choice. Mature agency includes an awareness that one person’s direction enters a shared world.
Education should therefore cultivate autonomy, competence, and relatedness together. A capable person without autonomy becomes compliant. An autonomous person without competence becomes ineffective. Either one without relationship becomes isolated. Human development requires all three.
AI should expand agency
There are two broad ways to imagine AI in a person’s development.
In the first, AI replaces agency. It interprets the person, selects the destination, constructs the plan, performs the difficult cognitive work, and continuously recommends the next action. The experience may feel efficient. It may also leave the person less practiced in framing problems, tolerating uncertainty, and making judgments.
In the second, AI strengthens agency. It helps a person see assumptions, generate alternatives, understand tradeoffs, prepare for a conversation, practice a skill, notice patterns, and reflect on an experience. It reduces avoidable friction while preserving meaningful choice and responsibility.
The boundary is not fixed. The same tool can strengthen agency in one context and weaken it in another. A novice may need more scaffolding; an expert may benefit from delegation. A person in crisis may need clear guidance; a person exploring identity may need room that no optimization function should close too quickly.
The design question is therefore not simply, “Can AI do this?” It is, “What should the person remain responsible for—and what capacity should this interaction help them build?”
An educational AI should sometimes answer. It should sometimes question. It should know when to help narrow options and when to widen them. It should make uncertainty legible without pretending to erase it. It should encourage contact with people and reality rather than becoming a sealed substitute for both.
The goal is not technological dependence disguised as personalization. It is supported authorship.
Education becomes continuous
If development occurs through repeated cycles of action and adaptation, education cannot remain confined to the years before “real life” begins.
People need structured development when they are choosing a field, entering work, leading for the first time, changing careers, building an idea, returning after illness, rebuilding after a setback, adapting to a new country, or discovering that a once-useful identity no longer fits.
These moments are educational, even when no course has been assigned.
Human support is often most powerful within them. A teacher sees potential a learner cannot yet see. A mentor provides context no database contains. A counselor helps a person name what is happening. A manager creates a consequential opportunity. A community makes persistence possible.
But human support is usually intermittent. The meeting ends. The program concludes. The class adjourns. The person returns to the hours and decisions in between.
A continuous educational layer can help connect those moments. It can help someone prepare before a conversation, act on a commitment afterward, practice between sessions, preserve reflection, and carry context into the next transition. It should not impersonate the human relationship. It should help its effects travel farther.
This suggests a hybrid institution: technology for continuity; people for relationship, context, challenge, and care; lived experience for the feedback no simulation can fully supply.
Continuous does not mean constant. A life is not an optimization project without an off switch. Development includes rest, play, belonging, contemplation, and periods in which the wise action is to stop striving. The point is availability across life, not surveillance throughout it.
A different idea of a university
The university has changed many times. It has been a community of scholars, a guardian of traditions, a site of professional preparation, a research engine, a civic institution, and a gateway to mobility. There is no reason to assume its present form is final.
What if a university were not only a place people entered once, but a relationship they could return to throughout adulthood?
What if its organizing unit were not only the course or degree, but the transition, the project, the question, and the next meaningful move?
What if it helped people connect knowledge to decisions, decisions to action, action to reflection, and reflection to a growing record of capability?
Such an institution would not need to declare war on existing universities. It could complement them. Traditional institutions are particularly strong when deep disciplinary study, research infrastructure, professional formation, and sustained intellectual community are required. A continuous developmental institution would address a different gap: the space between knowing and doing, between formal touchpoints, and between one chapter of life and the next.
Its community would also be global by default. A person may live in one country, work with colleagues in several others, learn from institutions everywhere, and belong to communities not defined by geography. A global education should not flatten these differences into a universal lifestyle. It should make people more capable of encountering difference, translating across contexts, and acting responsibly where they are.
The global should enlarge the local, not dissolve it.

Globalist University begins from a simple hypothesis:
Intelligence is becoming abundant. Direction is not.
We believe the educational challenge of the coming era is not merely to place more information in front of people. It is to help people develop the capacity to navigate a world of expanding capability and uncertain paths.
That means helping a person understand where they are, determine what matters now, develop relevant capability, take a meaningful next step, reflect on what happens, maintain momentum, and adapt when circumstances change.
It means treating direction not as a verdict delivered by an assessment, an algorithm, or an institution, but as a capacity built through movement.
It means designing AI to expand agency rather than replace it, and using technology to reinforce the teachers, mentors, organizations, and communities already doing indispensable human work.
It means building a university that people do not simply complete.
What we intend to build
We intend to build an AI-native system for continuous human development and navigation.
For individuals, it should turn uncertainty into a meaningful next step without pretending to settle an entire life. It should connect learning to projects, decisions, relationships, and real-world experiments. It should help people see their development over time—not only what they consumed, but what they attempted, learned, changed, and became able to do.
For organizations, it should extend development between the moments when human support is available. A program, manager, counselor, mentor, or coach may set direction and provide care; the system can help a participant practice, reflect, and continue. Technology provides continuity without claiming the relationship.
For community, it should create encounters that no personalized feed would predict: people in different places, fields, and life stages learning through one another’s experience. Navigation is personal, but it should never become solitary.
For content, it should favor orientation over volume. The question is not how much material can be published, but whether an idea helps someone perceive a situation more clearly or act more intelligently within it.
We will learn how to do this by building, observing, and revising. The thesis itself requires that humility. An institution devoted to adaptation should remain capable of changing its own methods.
The age of direction
Every expansion of human capability creates a temptation to mistake power for purpose.
AI may make extraordinary intelligence available to more people than any previous institution could reach. That is a profound opportunity. But intelligence, however capable, cannot relieve humanity of the need to decide what is worth doing with it.
The future of education will still involve knowledge, skill, teachers, scholarship, credentials, and institutions. It will also require a stronger developmental layer for the question that abundance makes impossible to avoid:
What will you direct your capabilities toward?
The answer will rarely arrive complete. It will be built through attention, relationship, experiment, responsibility, and revision. It will be built by moving through the world and allowing the world to answer back.
The institutions worthy of this age will not ask people merely to follow a path drawn in advance. They will help people become capable of navigating—without pretending that navigation is easy, solitary, or free from constraint.
The age of abundant intelligence should not become an age of human passivity.
It should become the age of direction.

The measure of an educational technology is not only what it can do for a person, but what the person becomes more able to do because of it. Assistance should leave people more capable of choosing, acting, and learning—not merely more dependent on the next recommendation.
