The Discipline of Small Evidence
Durable confidence is a memory of evidence, not a decision to be positive.

Observation
Most advice about self-belief tries to install a conclusion without supplying the evidence for it.
It asks you to believe you are capable, in advance, on no particular grounds. This works briefly and then collapses, because the mind is reasonably resistant to claims it cannot substantiate.
The people who seem durably confident are usually not better at believing things. They have a longer record.
Confidence, in the form that survives contact with difficulty, is a memory of evidence rather than a decision to be positive.
02 · Pattern
Pattern
Evidence accumulates through completed commitments, and the size of the commitment matters far less than the completion.
A small promise kept produces a small, real piece of proof. A large promise broken produces a piece of counter-evidence, and counter-evidence is weighted more heavily.
This is why ambitious plans often damage confidence. They generate more failed commitments per month than modest ones, and the record reflects it accurately.
The compounding runs in both directions, which is what makes the choice of commitment size consequential rather than merely tactical.
03 · Implication
Implication
The correct move when confidence is low is to shrink the commitment until you are certain you will complete it.
This feels like retreat and is actually the fastest available route, because it restarts the evidence engine instead of adding to the record of failure.
It also implies that self-trust is domain-specific. Evidence in one area transfers poorly to another, which is why competent people can be genuinely uncertain in unfamiliar territory. That is not a flaw; it is an accurate reading of a thin record.
Practically: stop trying to feel capable and start producing the smallest possible instances of being capable.
04 · Action
Action
Make one commitment small enough that failure is nearly impossible, and keep it.
Then keep it again. The content matters less than the streak, because what is being built is the record rather than the outcome.
Scale only after the current size has become boring. Boredom is the signal that the evidence is established and the commitment can grow.
When you break a commitment, reduce the size rather than renewing the resolution. Resolution without a change in scale produces the same result and one more piece of counter-evidence.
