Learning in Public

Private learning and public learning produce different results from the same hours.

Studied privately, a subject can feel understood while remaining vague, because nothing forces the vagueness into the open.

Explained publicly, the same subject exposes its gaps immediately. The moment you have to write the sentence, you discover you do not have it.

This is the mechanism, and it has little to do with audience size. It works at an audience of one.

Articulation is a test. Comprehension that cannot survive being stated was never comprehension; it was familiarity.

Familiarity is the more common failure. Having read something several times produces a strong feeling of knowing, which explanation dismantles quickly.

Public work adds a second mechanism: correction. Errors stated openly get corrected by other people, which is faster and less pleasant than discovering them alone.

A third effect is incidental but real. A visible record of learning is also a signal of capability, which is why this practice tends to produce opportunity as a side effect rather than a goal.

Publishing while learning is not self-promotion. It is a verification step applied to your own understanding.

That reframes the fear of looking foolish. The exposure of a gap is the return on the activity, not the cost of it.

It also means polish is counterproductive. Highly finished work hides the reasoning, and the reasoning is the part that benefits from being visible.

The compounding is slow and then obvious: a body of work that documents how your thinking developed is more persuasive than any claim about what you know.

After learning something, write the shortest honest explanation you can, and put it somewhere another person could read it.

Include what you are still unsure about. That admission is what invites correction, and correction is the fastest input available.

Prefer frequency over quality. Ten rough explanations will teach you more than one polished essay, because each one runs the test again.

Keep them in one place so the sequence is visible. The record of change is the artifact worth having.
